A look at how Chris Froome won the Tour de France

A look at how Chris Froome won the Tour de France

PARIS (AP) — Chris Froome is the second successive British rider to win the Tour de France. Here’s a look at his key moments:

Stage 1

Froome only had a few difficult moments on the bike. But one of those happened before the race had begun, with Froome tumbling off his bike after clipping a curb and grazing his right knee before the Stage 1 start. He changed bikes and returned to the peloton ahead of the official flag drop to start the Tour. If anything, it was the right time to fall because Froome avoided a heavy crash later on in the stage, when organizers changed the finish line area at the last minute because a team bus was camped on the line and unable to move.

”If that’s the only crash I have this Tour, I’ll take that,” Froome said at the time.

Stage 8

The first week of the Tour was about avoiding crashes and drinking enough water to cope with the searing heat as the race moved from Corsica and along the Mediterranean to Nice, Marseille and Montpellier. Once the race hit the high mountains of the Pyrenees, Froome launched a devastating attack on the last climb up to Ax 3 Domaines, and none of his rivals could even come close to catching him. That earned him the race leader’s yellow jersey – and the first question about doping. Froome’s incredible uphill speed drew comparisons to serial doping cheat Lance Armstrong, who was stripped of all seven Tour titles. Froome said he understood the suspicion but insisted he is clean. It would be the first of a barrage of questions he and Sky team manager Dave Brailsford would have to answer.

Stage 9

Isolated in the Pyrenees on a day when his Sky teammates fell apart, Froome had to withstand attacks from rivals all on his own. Colombian climber Nairo Quintana attacked him four times on the last climb but couldn’t break the Briton’s resolve. It was a defining moment as it showed he could defend just as well as he attacks.

Rest Day 1

Why was this rest day significant? Because Froome and Brailsford had to answer several questions about doping as the atmosphere started to turn sour. Self-professed Twitter experts provided a myriad of data, cycling blogs were full of comparisons with Armstrong and mainstream media outlets were keen to probe into why Froome is so good. It was a mere appetizer compared to what would happen on Rest Day 2.

Stage 11

Froome comes second to Tony Martin in the first time trial, missing out on victory by 12 seconds. It was still a victorious day for Froome as he finished more than 2 minutes ahead of archrival Alberto Contador and extended his race lead over the Spaniard to nearly 4 minutes.

Stage 13

For the first and only time, Froome loses to Contador after the Spaniard launched a clever late attack on a windy sprint stage to claw back more than 1 minute. It raised hopes – which proved fleeting – that the 2007 and ’09 champion could close the gap.

Stage 15

Froome did it again: another solo burst on the last climb up Mont Ventoux in Provence, one of the Tour’s most famed climbs. Froome showed rare emotion as he spoke of the pride he felt wearing the yellow jersey on the 100th Tour. His lead over Contador grew to 4 minutes, 25 seconds.

Rest Day 2

More questions about doping. Froome and Brailsford again assured reporters that they are racing clean. Brailsford offered to give the World Anti-Doping Agency unlimited access to Froome’s performance data. Froome snapped: ”Lance Armstrong cheated. I’m not cheating. End of story.”

Stage 17

Froome clinched his third stage victory, finally getting the time trial win he craved on a hilly course. Froome made up ground in the last third of the course after changing bikes, beating Contador by 9 seconds to move 4:34 ahead of him.

Stage 20(equals)

Froome assured everyone he would not go for any more stage wins in the three tough Alpine stages of the race. He stayed safe on Stages 18 and 19, but could not resist one last go on the penultimate 20th stage, jousting with Quintana and Joaquim Rodriguez on the day’s last climb up to Annecy-Semnoz. This time, Quintana beat him. But Froome still managed to extend his lead over Contador, who slipped off the podium and down to fourth.

Stage 21

Nothing left for Froome to do except ride safely on the processional stage and then enjoy a glass or three of chilled Champagne.

Austin Dillon wins at Eldora in first NASCAR dirt race in 43 years

Austin Dillon wins at Eldora in first NASCAR dirt race in 43 years

The Camping World Truck Series’ debut on dirt went from novelty to mainstay in the span of three hours Wednesday night at Eldora Speedway, as Austin Dillon scored the first NASCAR national series win on a dirt track in 43 years.

If you watched and weren’t entertained, I don’t know what to tell you.

“This is real racing right here, this is all I’ve got to say,” Dillon said in victory lane after beating Kyle Larson to the finish line in a green-white-checker sprint.

The thing is, that wasn’t just the joy in Dillon coming out after he reached victory lane. The excitement of being at Tony Stewart’s track was palpable and authentic. Drivers and team members exclaimed throughout the evening about the race, and heck, not even a discouraging word was said by the NASCAR social media chamber, a notoriously finicky segment.

A big reason for that excitement? The racing.

Yes, it was different. But it wasn’t just the difference in styles in how a driver attacks a half-mile dirt track versus a 1.5 mile asphalt track that made Wednesday night mesmerizing. It was multiple grooves, the throttle management and a genuine sense that the race was ultimately going to be decided by the drivers and their trucks, not by clean air. (Which can be a bit of an oxymoron at a dirt track anyway.) Throw in a big helping of nostalgia — many NASCAR drivers grew up racing local dirt tracks — and it’s hard not to consider the night a rousing success.

Need proof of how that all came together? Look no further than the battle between Norm Benningand Clay Greenfield in the Last Chance Qualifier race to get into the 150 lap main event. Instead of relying only on single truck qualifying to set the field for the race, NASCAR used heat races and a subsequent last-chance race to whittle the 35 trucks attempting the race to the 30 trucks that would start the race.

With two laps left in the Last Chance race, Benning was holding onto the final transfer spot into the main race in fifth place. Greenfield was right behind him, both drivers in trucks they own and prepare themselves, a far cry from the multi-million dollar operations in the Sprint Cup Series.

Greenfield leaned on Benning’s bumper as the two approached the white flag. Benning got loose, but stayed in the throttle and held the position. As they came through turns three and four again,Greenfield got to the inside of Benning and slid up into him, forcing Benning’s truck into the wall. Sparks flew, but Benning stayed in the gas once again, nipping Greenfield at the line for that last place starting position.

And when Benning got back to the garage? Members from seemingly every team were waiting for him to get out of his truck to congratulate him.

Did NASCAR take a gamble by staging a type of race not run for nearly half a century at an 18,000 seat facility owned by a Sprint Cup Series champion? Probably. Did it pay off? Absolutely. Instead of the question being “Does the Truck Series return next year?” it’s now “When can the Nationwide and Cup Series do this?”

Guardado told Marca: “I haven’t been able to speak to [Soldado] since the Confederations Cup but I don’t know whether he’ll go or stay.

“That’s not something I can manage myself, but I wish him the best anywhere. Iif he is here, then all the better since Soldado is a great player, our goalscorer and an important part of this team.”

As crashes mount, Hamlin should consider backing off

As crashes mount, Hamlin should consider backing off

LOUDON, N.H. — Denny Hamlin’s Sprint Cup season has been an unwanted procession of alarming impacts that have forced a decision potentially as jarring as a 200-mph collision with a concrete wall.

It’s time for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver to weigh whether it’s worth continuing to race in NASCAR’s premier series this year.

The insurmountable reality of mediocre results and increasingly cringe-worthy crashes are screaming that it isn’t.

Hamlin has reached a self-proclaimed threshold where season-ending back surgery would make more sense than finishing out the string of a campaign tainted by portentous wrecks. The growing piles of mangled sheet metal carry a message that seems unmistakable: Sorry kid, this isn’t your year.

Since returning from the wreck at Fontana, Calif., that fractured his back and sidelined him for four races, Hamlin’s miracle bid for making the Chase for the Sprint Cup has dimmed at an accelerated rate. After courageously returning with consecutive top-five finishes at Darlington Raceway and Charlotte Motor Speedway, Hamlin started on the pole position June 2 at Dover International Speedway. A blown tire sent his No. 11 Toyota rocketing into the wall and triggered a significant downturn in his fortunes.

He has crashed the past three weekends — in practice at Sonoma Raceway and in races at Kentucky Speedway and Daytona International Speedway.

As physically taxing as the year has been, there are signs it has been as mentally draining, too.

According to David Smith’s MotorsportsAnalytics.com (a site that offers NASCAR analysis via sabermetrics-style advanced statistics), Hamlin’s terminal crash frequency (measuring the rate at which he is being eliminated from races by wrecks) is a series-high 0.31 this year. In the last seven years, the highest mark posted during a season is 0.25 (Ward Burton in 2007).

It’s worth pondering whether Hamlin, who was so focused and steady last season despite stumbles by his team, is pressing too hard to earn the victories needed for the Chase. A breather might help as much in clearing his mind as fully healing his body.

With each sickening thud, it’s more agonizing watching Hamlin walk gingerly from his battered Camry to a waiting ambulance, particularly when there seems little left at stake.
